Some Relationships Between Burnout And Stress.

What is burnout? Probably the word sounds strange. If it is to you then just read on and get enlightened about it. According to Herbert Freuden Berger (1974) in his book. He states that burnout is the extinction of motivation or incentive, especially where one's devotion to a cause or relationship fails to produce the wanted results. In order words the state of anxiety disorders, depression and disturbed mood are of the same category with burnout which happened to be far from any form of clinically diagnosed psychological disorder.

However, burnout is not as severe as anxiety disorder, depression and disturbed mood. Burnout though is common, doctors are specifically more susceptible to it. Burnout is mainly caused by things that stresses one and they differ in terms of duration and intensity. It dose not have any connection with chemical imbalance.

Burnout has similar symptoms to that of stress such as the following;

1. increased absence from work
2. lowered immune system
3. emotion and physical exhaustion
4. withdrawal from personal relationships

When you are stressed for so long, you easily become tired and fatigued, and you find it very difficult to get up from where you are either sitting or lying down for long because you lack enough energy to do so. Another identifiable case of burnout is emotional exhaustion which often leads to one getting moody, becoming sad without actually knowing the cause of one's sadness and eventually one becomes frustrated. The excitement that living seem to give one in the past begins to die down.

People with burnout cases become more susceptible to diseases and could suffer from minor ailment like the flu or cold and other more serious ailments. Burnout also leads to one becoming isolated, deliberately staying away from people and trying to refrain from any kind of personal relationship because you feel you do not have anything to offer. Having fun becomes less and less a thing of interest to you and having people around you is more of a disturbance.

When a person is experiencing burnout, he sees more of the negative aspect of life than the positive. You get easily weighed down by little trouble such as you can handle before. The resulting effect of burnout brings about lack of productivity in work place and most of the time stay away from work.. Getting up from bed in the morning becomes a more difficult task to carryout, eventually, out of reluctance stay back home. Therefore, employers should take note that those experiencing burnout should not be pushed excessively. Both parties should imbibe the culture of pleasurable activities and less work..

Burnout associated with stress is a thing that can be handled if there is understanding between employer and the employee. Work could be designed to reduce stress and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
